Eco Friendly Soft Fabric Information to help you make your choices when purchasing the Bean Products that YogaBody2.com carries.

This is about Soft Products such as Yoga Straps, Yoga Bolsters, Zafus and Zabutons, the Pranayama Cushion, Cotton Yoga Mats, and all supplies made of a fabric material where you are given choices of which to purchase. Here is some information on those materials.

Because Nylon is made entirely of petrochemicals and Polyester is totally synthetic, we don't carry any products made of  these. The damage done to our bodies by inhaling the fumes and touching these types of products is nothing when compared to what it does to our Eco system, ground water supply, they do not biodegrade and the fumes from making them, or when they burn, are highly toxic and can eat holes through our ozone layer. Toxic chemicals can stay with us forever.

Something has to change and we can all help to do just that, slowly and little by little we can eat away at some of the rampant pollution. If no one buys highly toxic products, they will eventually go out of production and we will save the world, a little bit at a time.

Now, About Cotton: Cotton is a soft, staple fiber that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant, a shrub native to regions around the world, including the Americas, India and Africa. The fiber most often is spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth.

Differences in purchasing Organic Cotton: Unless it's organic, did you know that cotton crops in the USA occupy 1% of the country's farmland but use 50% of all pesticides?   Globally, regular cotton uses 25% of all insecticides and 10% of all pesticides. It is estimated that less that 10% of the chemicals applied to cotton are accomplishing their tasks. The rest of the chemicals are absorbed into the plant, our air, the soil, water and eventually, into our bodies and our underground water supply.

Organic agriculture uses natural enemies to suppress harmful insects. The production of organic cotton is more expensive than the production of conventional cotton, so organic products are naturally more expensive. But toxic pollution from synthetic chemicals is eliminated. I'd say that is a pretty good trade-off if you can afford it.

Organic cotton is produced in organic agricultural systems that produce food and fiber according to clearly established standards. Organic agriculture prohibits the use of toxic and chemical pesticides and fertilizers, as well as genetically modified organisms. Buying organic means replenishing and maintaining soil fertility, and promoting a healthy environment.

Hooray for Hemp: Hemp fiber is the longest, strongest, most durable, most elastic natural vegetable fiber grown. A normal stand of 200 to 300 plants per square meter shades out weeds, leaving the fields weed-free at harvest and covered in leaves that improve the soil in a self-mulching Eco-system.

A hemp field produces a very large bulk of plant material in a short period of time (stalks can reach 15 ft tall in 70-90 growing days). The yield can reach between 3 and 7 tons of dry hemp fiber stalk per acre. On a sustainable basis, hemp produces more pulp per acre than timber and can be used for every quality of paper. Creating hemp pulp reduces the need for acids and its creamy color lends itself to environmentally-friendly bleaching thereby reducing use of harsh chlorine compounds. Hemp fiber also softens with each washing without fiber degradation.

All products made solely from hemp fiber are biodegradable, compost-able and recyclable. Hemp planting reduces deforestation and improves the soil upon which it is grown.

Recent developments in processing have made it possible to soften coarse fibers to a wearable level. Characteristics of hemp fiber are its superior strength and durability, resistance to ultraviolet light and mold, comfort and good absorbency. Did you know that the original Levi Strauss jeans were made from lightweight hemp canvas?

Other interesting notes are that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both cultivated hemp on their farms. Benjamin Franklin started the first American paper mill, which made paper exclusively from hemp, and the Declaration of Independence was drafted on paper made from hemp fibers.

The Benefits of Bamboo are vast. Bamboo is a type of grass which is stronger than most woods and:
  •  Bamboo requires no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers in its cultivation.
  •  It starts to re-grow immediately after it is harvested and it regenerates without the need for replanting.
  •  Bamboo is a robust and plentiful resource that removes a vast amount of CO2 from the atmosphere while releasing an abundance of oxygen.
  •  Bamboo has the ability to grow in a variety of climates, from jungles to high on mountainsides.
  •  Some varieties of bamboo can grow up to 1 ft. a day in mature stands.
  •  As a natural and renewable resource, bamboo offers an opportunity to turn away from the destruction of native forests towards managed commercial plantations that can be selectively harvested annually without the destruction of the grove or stand as is the case with forests.
  •  Bamboo minimizes CO2 gases and generates up to 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.
  • Bamboo has the tensile strength of steel allowing for virtually limitless uses.
  • New bamboo stalks naturally regenerate from the old root system which helps control erosion and maintains topsoil on deforested hillsides.
  • The bamboo industry employs many people, requires minimal investment and, for the most part, utilizes simple technology and equipment.

The Many Benefits of Natural Rubber

  • Natural rubber is a renewable resource which is sustainably harvested from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis).
  • Rubber trees remove harmful CO2 from our atmosphere while releasing essential oxygen within a natural eco-system.
  • Natural rubber can safely biodegrade.
  • Natural rubber requires the use of about 1/10 of the fossil fuel required to produce synthetic rubbers.
  • Natural rubber is produced by an environmentally friendly industry and assists in diminishing the environmental damage caused by the widespread use of fossil fuel energy sources.

Did You Know About Dipped Rubber?

Natural Fitness Resistance Tubes are manufactured from dipped rubber tubing whereas many competitors offer extruded rubber tubes.

  • Dipped rubber is superior because its multiple thin layers of rubber actually reinforce one another.
  • If one layer is damaged or weak a dipped tube can continue to perform without failing.
  • An extruded tube is made from one thick layer of rubber which, once damaged or degraded, can break unexpectedly.
